BOSTON (AP) — Outgoing Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says the city and its next mayor face a number of critical challenges.

In what was billed as his final major address as mayor, Menino told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday that he expects dramatic reductions in federal funding to have a major impact on nonprofit organizations and research facilities.
Menino also urged business leaders to take steps to address income inequality in the city, and warned of the ever-rising cost of higher education.
Menino pointed to numerous accomplishments in areas such as education, housing and public safety during his two decades as mayor.
He also vowed to work with Mayor-elect Martin Walsh on a smooth transition, but added: “This isn’t about Tom or Marty. It’s about the people of our city.”
